Thanks to research, there are now more than 18 million Americans, or approximately 5.4% of the population, who have beaten cancer. We call attention to their victories and determination by celebrating June as National Cancer Survivors Month. The first Sunday in June is set aside as National Cancer Survivors Day.
While each person diagnosed with cancer faces unique challenges, one of every four survivors reports a poor quality of life. One in 10 reports a poor mental health-related quality of life, so the challenges aren’t over when cancer goes into remission.
A Chance to Reflect
The month of June is an opportunity for reflection—a chance to honor cancer survivors, support those who are still on their healing journey, and remember loved ones who have passed.
It’s also a time to remember that survivors still face emotional, physical, and financial challenges.
This is where support groups can help. Connecting with others who have been through similar experiences can be healing. The Edwards Cancer Institute and St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington both offer breast cancer support groups. SMCC also has a support group for all cancer survivors, and you can locate other groups online.
Talk with Your Doctor
Go get checked. Talk with your primary care provider about cancer screenings. Also, if you have a loved one or friend who is suffering from a form of cancer, consider organizing an event or fundraiser to help attack this dreaded disease.
You may also want to consider donating to our Good Samaritan Cancer Fund, which helps patients who are struggling to pay for their medication, transportation to appointments, hotel stays for long visits, and other costs.
