“High Five” campaign

April is Child Advocacy Month across West Virginia, with Hoops Family Children’s Hospital participating through its “High Five” campaign. This effort is designed to raise funds for the vital work of Hoops’ Child Advocacy Center (CAC).

The CAC is a safe place where children can speak with trained professionals and medical providers about physical or other abuse they may have suffered. Interviews are conducted in a child-friendly environment and in tune with each child’s emotional needs. A trained interviewer evaluates the child and asks questions that honor their trust and comfort but never forces the child to talk.

The center alleviates the need for a child to repeatedly share their traumatic story with doctors, law enforcement, investigators, and others. Based on the interview, a team of professionals will make decisions on how best to help the child, which may include therapy, courtroom preparation, victim advocacy, or medical examinations.

There are many ways your donation to the CAC can benefit kids. For example, our “wish list” includes such items as Legos, Play-Doh, coloring books, art kits, soft throw blankets, tabletop sports games, plush animals, and stickers.

While Hoops maintains the only advocacy center in the Huntington area, there are 21 across the state—all affiliated with the West Virginia Child Advocacy Network. The statewide leader in the fight against child abuse, the organization was able to support more than 4,800 children during 2022-23.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the associated lifetime costs of each child experiencing nonfatal mistreatment is just over $210,000. This includes associated costs for health care, productivity losses, child welfare, criminal justice, and special education. While the WVCAN currently serves 47 counties, it hopes to expand to all 55 by 2029.
