Zachary H. Hansen, MD

Dr. Zachary Hansen is the Medical Director of PROACT and holds the same title with the Division of Addiction Services in the Department of Family Medicine at Marshall University’s School of Medicine. A pioneer of Medically Assisted Treatment (MAT) in the Tri-State Area, he was instrumental in the formation of PROACT. The agency seeks to provide comprehensive care for those seeking substance abuse treatment. Dr. Hansen oversees the organization’s clinical and MAT programming and has more than 15 years of experience in treating substance use disorder.
Dr. Hansen has maintained certification with the American Board of Family Medicine since 2006 and specializes in both primary care and addiction medicine. From 2006 to 2020, he worked for Valley Health Systems in Huntington. He also obtained a federal medical waiver in 2010 that enabled him to prescribe a medication treating opioid addiction and start building his practice in this specialty.
A graduate of Hiram (Ohio) College with a Bachelor of Arts degree and an emphasis in biology, Dr. Hansen earned his medical degree at the Marshall Medical School in 2004. He received the Bertha and Lake Dolan Award for achieving the highest GPA in his class at Marshall. He completed his residency in Marshall’s Family Medicine Department.
