Commodore Martin is a native of Huntington West Virginia, and entered the US Navy in 1980. After completing nuclear power training, he was assigned as an instructor at Nuclear Power Prototype D1G in Saratoga Springs, New York. There he earned Bachelor of Science Degrees in Human Resources and Business Management. In 1984, he reported to the pre-commissioning crew of USS ALABAMA (SSBN 731). Following her commissioning and maiden voyages, he reported to Officers Candidate School in Newport, RI and received his Commission in 1985. His extensive military career led him on many influential missions and positions, retiring as Commodore Martin from the Navy in June of 2010 after more than 30 years of active service.
His military decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with four gold stars, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with one gold star, and various other Campaign, Personal and Unit awards. He wears the Command At Sea Pin and Surface Warfare Insignia.
